Star Mittens

So, this was my first attempt at designing Mittens.  Why? Well, quite honestly, the idea of crocheting thumbs scared me.  But when I heard about a Facebook group called: Crochet Mitten Drive where crocheters would make pairs of mittens to donate to those in need; I knew it was time for me to conquer the ‘fear’ and design a pair of Mittens…. and so I give you the Star Mittens.

Star Mittens - KatiDCreations.com

This pattern is written in 3 different sizes and is surprisingly quick to work up and believe it or not, very few ends to take care of!!!  Not much yarn is needed for these Star Mittens and would be a perfect project to use as a scrap buster!

Oh and the thumbs are not scary I promise!

Granny and the Stars

I Love this hat!  Don’t get me wrong I love other hats but this is one hat I actually look good in.  Yes, I am one of those weird people who is forced to wear hats for function and not fashion.  Granted I may not actually look good in this one either, but I love the hat so much that I just don’t care. 🙂Granny Square Star Stitch SlouchyI made this hat to be very loose and relaxed fitting on my head, that way if I wanted to take it off later I would not worry about hat head.

PLEASE don’t get discouraged from all the different links in this pattern.  These are simply great resources!

This is a fun hat that is first started by making Granny Squares by Simply Collectible Crochet, then you will join the squares by using the Invisible Seam Stitch tutorial by Oomabawka Designs and finally you will finish the hat with a star stitch.  If you are not sure how the star stitch is completed simply head to Moogly Blog for her great tutorial!

So enough gibber jabber, on with the pattern!

Materials:
Hook size 4.5/3.5 and 6.0/5.0
Loops & Thread Woolike 1/super fine – I chose 5 colors, of course you can chose whatever and however many colors you like.
Embroidery Needle

*Special Note* – This entire project is worked using 2 strands of yarn, I bought 1 skein of each color and ‘dug’ out the strand from the center. Dug being the key term.

Granny Square Star Stitch Slouchy

I eliminated some of the repeating rows to make the child hat not as slouchy

Granny Square Band :

Work a total of 8 granny squares following the pattern by: Simply Collectible Crochet

I highly recommend finishing off all the ends prior to joining the squares together.

Join the granny squares following the photo tutorial by: Oombawka Designs Crochet

Fishing edge on granny squares, again follow directions from: Simply Collectible Crochet only your stitch count will be (13 x 8 = 104) Working 13SC across each of the 8 granny squares.  *I chose to work 2 rows of back loop single crochet in what would be the last rows of the hat, and only 1 row on edge that will be worked for the hat*

Hat :

Visit Moogly Blog for the Star Stitch tutorial if you are needing a bit of help.

*Special Note:  Moogly Blog pulls up a total of 6 loops on the hook, where with this pattern you will only pull up 5 loops on your hook.

Standard Star Stitches are traditionally done in multiples of 2+1.  In this pattern the 5th loop that will pull up in the final star stitch will be done in the same as joining.  This helps to disguise the seam that would normally appear.
